Regina Silvers

Photograph of Regina Silvers I have always loved to draw the figure and have done so since my student days. More than ten years ago, I began using (black and white) newspaper images of placard-bearing protesters as a subject on which to base gestural, expressionistic paintings. This allowed me to combine the drawing of the human figure with my interest in formal painting issues and the contemporary social concerns being depicted. I often work from the same source material for a number of years, approaching it with different materials, focus, and scale. I aim to maintain the power and immediacy of the event, and to establish a calligraphic rhythm, through color and line, that enforces the dynamic structure embedded in the composition and the interaction of its forms.
