I am interested in the matter of our flesh; its origins and destiny in the earth. Figures are featured amongst patterns of dots, flowers, leaves and lines. The viewer may question whether the figures are floating, drowning, or caught, completely still, by the earth's encroachment upon the body's decaying boundaries. The visual result is a play between movement and stillness, blur and focus, and noise and silence.

The process begins with a body being documented by means of a monoprint. After a layer of acrylic paint is brushed onto the skin, the model is laid onto the canvas, leaving a full length body-print. Around this mark I seek to surround the body with beautiful in-betweening, showing the body's fate in both inner and outer worlds.

The works may also extend into the area of portraiture. I name the paintings after the individuals that pose for the body print. I am drawn to the individuality of each print, and want to celebrate the spark in each mark-making person, while mourning the ephemeral quality of what is carrying their soul.

The very bodies which carry us through life are steadily bearing us to the time that the earth will close over our skins, and flesh will give way to flora. It seems at once both cheerless and blissful.
